Bite-sized horror adventure

Fright Night is a premium single-player horror from developer Luphi Interactive. This adventure game puts players in the shoes of the protagonist who is reliving memories they would rather forget. Players will need to brave nerve-wracking environments to find keys that will allow access to the next location.

Fright Night, like other indie horror games, tells its story through a series of notes. The game tries to terrify players through a combination of dark visuals, an eerie soundtrack, and some jumpscares here and there. It isn’t Outlast, and it doesn’t do anything new, but it’s a respectable attempt at horror

Story, graphics, and gameplay

The graphics of Fright Night isn’t exceptional, but it isn’t bad either. The texture, lighting, and shadows are decent and mesh well with what the game wants to accomplish. Many areas are purposefully dark, and the eerie soundtrack complements the visuals to create a terrifying atmosphere. There are various outdoor and indoor locations that keep exploration from being monotonous, at least visually.

Like most horror games, the protagonist in this game only has a flashlight. Players need to rely on hiding or running to avoid whatever lurks in the dark. The mechanics can only be described as barebones since it boils down to finding a key and opening the door to the next location. Sometimes the monster appears to spice up moments, but these jumpscares can feel cheap and out of place

Story-wise, Fright Night is divided into four chapters and an epilogue, each exploring a different aspect of the plot. Players learn more about the protagonist’s past through notes found in the levels. This type of storytelling fails to bring out the full potential of the story, but it isn’t new in horror games and should be expected from a small developer. The game can be finished in under an hour

Short but not awful

Luphi Interactive is comprised of only two developers and Fright Night is the first game they published. That being said, the game is simple and doesn’t have the bells and whistles you will find in AAA titles. The game doesn’t offer much and there are elements that need more polish, but you can find some fun playing this bit-sized horror game if you manage your expectations

PROS

  • Smooth gameplay
  • Decent visuals

CONS

  • Very short, can be finished in under an hour
  • Some jumpscares are cheap and not scary at all
  • Gameplay boils down to finding keys
